Avatar movie thoughts
Enjoying The Show1) What are the demographics of the United States? The majority of the population, and the majority of the actors, are white. When you automatically rule out white actors, you rule out a good chunk of the talent available. Worse, you're ruling these actors out solely on skin color. Actors are human beings, and so you cannot just mail-order a custom-made actor like you can, say, clothes or an Ipod.
I can just picture this:
"I want a teenaged male actor who is 6'2 and 185 pounds, has a soft, tragically cute face and a manly-tenor voice and can pull off such-and-such good guy in the way I envision that good guy. He must also work well with others, have strong charisma, be healthy and have no other major commitments, be able to do martial arts and learn. He must also be new talent, look Asian, and speak clear, American-accented English. Can you deliver this actor by next month?"
You can argue that if you expand the search base to outside the US you'd find the absolute perfect actors. I say, why bother when you can find the near-perfect actors right here, whose only "flaw" is that they are the wrong race? Is this kind of racism okay?
2) What makes a culture? Is it the skin color? No. It's the clothes, the artwork, the architecture, the food, the gestures and everyday greetings. It's in the actions, beliefs, and creations of that culture. A Black man born in Britain is British, regardless of his skin color. And it is only in this way that Asian influences will in the world of Avatar will come through: not in superficial skin color, but in the clothes, the ritualistic gestures, the architecture and food. These are what makes up the cultures in the Avatar world.
3) Look who's directing this movie. Can you really believe that he is anti-Asian? That he could be pushed around by Hollywood fascists? Look at what he has done already. He is used to doing unconvensional movies, of doing things his way. He already knows firsthand what it's like to be a non-white in a white culture. If he is choosing these white actors, I believe it is not because he has racist reasons. He has a different set of priorities -- new talent, young, maybe works well with him, can pull off their respective characters, personality -- and obviously skin color is low enough on his priority list that he'd rather sacrifice it than, say, facial bone structure. For example, when I saw his pick for Katara, I was blown away by how much she truly resembled Katara, skin color aside.
... Okay, those are basically my thoughts. I was going to put this in an essay, but I don't feel like being cussed at right now.
Now for real life!
Life is good. My husband is doing the papers he needs to get on-base family housing. As soon as he has a place for us, we'll be going over. Until then, he has my cell phone. That means I can call him! Yay!!!
